Got furloughed?

Or want to be furloughed?

I’m Sophie. I (very rarely these days) write about train travel and haunted places. I’m part-time furloughed.

My manager at my good job asked what I was going to do with my furloughed time. I said maybe I would write on my blogs. He said, “aren’t they travel blogs?” Oh how we laughed.

So I thought I’d write a newsletter about things to do and think about on furlough.

I am immensely privileged to be in this position. I believe more people should be furloughed and that ultimately we should have a Universal Basic Income.

The term furlough is archaic. It means leave from work. To prisoners, it means leave from prison to attend things like funerals. It’s kind of like gardening leave - which is when rich people who work at large organisations move from one fancy job to another and they get three to six months off (paid) so they don’t share trade secrets.

Just like you, I’ve been thinking about the ways I want to fill my spare time. Sometimes that is just by lying horizontally and doing a think. Sometimes, like yesterday it means thinking about starting the project of writing a newsletter and then lying horizontally and doing a think.

What is furlough? It means a leave of absence from work. I am on part-time furlough. This edgy (can you tell I’m in my 30s?) newsletter is about things to do and think about while furloughed.
